Which impact wrench is suitable for tire changing?

For tire changes, an 18V impact wrench with a 1/2" square drive and a loosening torque of several hundred Nm is suitable; final tightening is always done with a torque wrench. The best choice if you are changing car tires at home: Makita DTW300.
The tightening torque for passenger car wheel nuts is usually about 110–140 Nm; the exact figure can be found in your car’s owner's manual. For tire changes, a 1/2" square drive 18V impact wrench with a loosening torque of several hundred Nm is suitable, such as the Makita DTW300 (tightening up to 330 Nm, loosening up to 580 Nm). Always perform the final tightening with a torque wrench.
What torque is required for wheel nuts?
For many passenger cars, the tightening torque for wheel nuts and bolts is 110–130 Nm, and for some cars up to 140 Nm. For vans and SUVs, the figure may be higher. Always check your car's owner's manual.
This means that you do not need a very powerful tool for tightening. Power is primarily needed for loosening.
Why is loosening torque more important than tightening torque?
A wheel nut that has been exposed to rain, salt, and cold for half a year can be rusted and stuck. If the nuts were tightened with too much force the last time, they will be even harder to remove. This requires more force than tightening.
Makita provides two numbers for impact wrenches: max. tightening torque and max. nut-busting torque (loosening). For tire changes, look primarily at the second number. The greater the margin relative to the car's tightening torque, the more reliably a stuck nut will come loose.

Why is a 1/2" square drive suitable for tire changes?
Passenger car wheel nut sockets mostly use a 1/2" square drive fitting. For this reason, all models below have a 1/2" fitting. Makita 3/4" and 1" impact wrenches (DTW1001Z, TW001GZ, TW010GZ) are designed for large bolts in construction, trucks, and machinery. For a passenger car, they are too large and heavy: the TW010GZ weighs 10.9 kg without a battery.
Impact wrenches for tire changes: comparison
| Model | Max. tightening torque | Max. nut-busting torque | Drive | Weight with battery | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DTW190Z | 190 Nm | 320 Nm | 1/2" | 1.4–1.8 kg | Light home use |
| DTW300Z / DTW300RTJ | 330 Nm (modes 100 / 160 / 210 / 330 Nm) | 580 Nm | 1/2" | 1.5–1.8 kg | Passenger car, home and garage |
| TW004GZ (40V XGT) | 350 Nm | 630 Nm | 1/2" | 1.8–3.1 kg | If using XGT batteries |
| DTW700Z | 700 Nm | 1000 Nm | 1/2" | 2.3–2.7 kg | Stuck nuts, vans, workshop |
| DTW1002Z | 1200 Nm | 1600 Nm | 1/2" | 3.3–3.6 kg | Heavy-duty work, too powerful for cars |
All 18V models use Makita 18V LXT batteries. Models ending in Z are tools only, without a battery or charger.
Use only impact sockets
Standard chrome sockets are not made for impact use. They can crack, and fragments can fly. Only use impact sockets with an impact wrench. These have thicker walls and are usually black.
We have a Makita 1/2" impact socket set (9 pcs) with sizes 8–24 mm, including 17, 19, and 21 mm. Before purchasing, check the size of your car's wheel nuts. The socket length is 38 mm. For alloy wheels where the nut is deep, a longer socket may be needed. Extensions and universal joints reduce impact force, so only use them when necessary.
Why must final tightening be done with a torque wrench?
An impact wrench does not tighten with exact force. The actual torque depends on the nut, socket, battery charge, and how long you hold the trigger. Even the lowest mode of the DTW300 (100 Nm) is a maximum value, not a precise setting. Over-tightening can stretch bolts and damage the rim. Weak tightening is dangerous while driving.
Correct procedure for tire change:
- Loosen the nuts with the impact wrench. The car must be securely parked with the handbrake on.
- Put the new wheel on and tighten the nuts lightly using the lowest mode or by hand.
- Lower the car.
- Tighten the nuts with a torque wrench according to the car owner's manual in a cross pattern.
- Re-check the tightening after driving 50–100 km.
What else is needed for tire changes?
- Jack and jack stand. Do not work under the car if it is only supported by a jack.
- Torque wrench with a range covering your car's tightening torque (e.g., 40–200 Nm).
- Impact socket in your car's wheel nut size and, if necessary, a locking wheel nut adapter.
- Charged battery. If the battery is nearly empty, the impact force will also drop.
- Gloves and safety glasses. An impact wrench is loud, so use hearing protection: the sound pressure of the DTW300 is 100 dB(A).
The advantage of a cordless impact wrench over a lug wrench is speed and less physical effort. Four wheels can be loosened and tightened in a few minutes without tiring your back. Stuck nuts come loose with impacts without you having to jump on the lug wrench.

Which Makita impact wrench is right for you?
- Choose DTW300Z if you already have an 18V LXT battery and are changing tires for your own and your family's cars at home. Four modes help tighten the nuts without over-tightening.
- Choose DTW300RTJ if you do not yet have Makita batteries. This is the same tool in a kit with a battery.
- Choose DTW700Z if the nuts are often rusty, you change van tires, or you work frequently. Loosening torque up to 1000 Nm.
- Choose DTW190Z if the tool is mainly for lighter work and tire changing is infrequent. The loosening margin is smaller.
- Choose TW004GZ if you already use 40V XGT batteries.
All models are in the impact wrenches category, and batteries and chargers are in the batteries and chargers category. Other tools with the same battery can be found under 18V LXT. Come ask for advice at our Paide store at Pärnu tn 8 – we will help you choose both the tool and the sockets.
Frequently asked questions
